The joke is that Java is platform specific you cannot download a Java applet that works on all three Unix,Windows,MacOS platforms. So you are back to the problem of everyone writing applets for MSFT Windows. No longer true as of 4/30: "Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced that it has released the 1.1 version of the JavaTM Plug-in software.
