The joke is that Java is platform specific you cannot download a Java applet that works on all three Unix,Windows,MacOS platforms. So you are back to the problem of everyone writing applets for MSFT Windows.

No longer true as of 4/30:

"Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced that it has released the 1.1 version of the JavaTM Plug-in software. Sun's release of Java Plug-in (formerly known as Project Java Activator) software enables enterprise customers to direct Java applets or JavaBeansTM components on their intranet web pages to run using Sun's Java Runtime Environment (JRE), instead of the browser's default Java runtime. This enables an enterprise to deploy Java applets that take full advantage of the latest capabilites and features of the Java platform and be assured that they will run reliably and consistently. Additionally, Apple Computer, Inc. has committed to create a port of the Java Plug-in software for the Macintosh platform."

Enterprise apps:

"You will be able to deploy all Oracle Applications on any client platform that supports Java-enabled browsers. These client platforms will include personal computers, the Macintosh, and Motif-based machines, as well as the NC TM."

With the Java plugin, IE 3+ will support the same java that Netscape 3+ does. Try as he may, Bill can't stop Java.
