Lee,
I don`t think that AMD or Cyrix are able to head off Intel because as the leader, Intel blazes the trails and sets the standards.
Up `till now Intel has played the game very well. Like you said...when the
competition starts to catch up Intel jumps to a new level of technology.
On the other hand, AMD and Cyrix are figureativly speaking...trying to head them off at the pass.
Thiat`s what I and some of the others here are trying to get a grip on...whether or not Intel will be able to continue to be the juggernaut.
We all know Intel`s successful past as arguably the greatest growth company in world history but those who don`t learn from the mistakes of fallen empires aspire to the same fate.
I have faith in Andy Grove too...but I like to reinforce faith with facts, discussion and the like.
Mainly what I see here is a form of religious zealotry not unlike a cult. Even in the face of design flaws "Intel Inside" somehoe equates to "quality"?!? Huh?
What it really equates to is a lot of advertising dollars getting boxmakers to put a sticker on the outside of a box. In that sense it also means "industry leader".

Intel has done wrong and will continue to make mistakes. Then again, they are the one blazing the trail. Because of that lead they have always been able to double back
and get it right. The question is not will AMD or Cyrix pass them but how close they will get to them...

As far as investing in Intel..that`s hard to argue against. The overall market environment is very favorable for stocks at this time. Intel is certainly one of the "must have" stocks of funds and institutions.
Should the market head higher into Februrary which it looks like it will, Intel can easily hit the 140 and beyond level in that time frame irrespective of any bad techno press...
That`s what it`s all about isn`t it? Stock price?
Another thing...don`t fall in love with your stocks...they have no soul.
