Lucent union members support strike if talks fail

NEW YORK, May 28 (Reuters) - Union workers at Lucent Technologies Inc (LU - news) voted to authorize a strike if contract talks with the
telecommunications equipment giant fail, the unions said Thursday.

The Communications Workers of America (CWA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), which are bargaining jointly with Lucent, represent 44,000 workers at the company.

The unions said their members voted by more than a 9-to-1 margin to give their union leaders the authorization to call a strike if necessary.

The current union contracts expire at midnight on Saturday, May 30. Contract negotiations continued in Washington, D.C., this week.

I could just see the excuses now: "If it wasn't for that strike, it wouldn't have taken 2 years to ship that router"
or
"Losing our OSPF specialists in the strike was a severe blow to the
scheduled launch"
or how about
"After competing for the last 5 years in the IP space, we've decided to launch our new IP over voice strategy. This will force the market to play in our field of strength."

Bring on the elephants !!

Cheers,

Peppe
