Bob: I don't believe there could be a way of telling the difference between a short sale and one against a box, debenture or any derivative. The shares still have to be borrowed and recorded as a short sale. Maintaining the equal or better shares would of course give you the added security that you borrowed your own shares. They could not be called.

The recording of the short sale is not affected by the maintenance of the securities backing the sale. There may be an affect in fees paid should the shorted stock price exceed the price of the short sale.

JMO, I didn't call to check.
