Charles: re: "when I finally upgrade from Windows 3.1 to Windows 98" I notice you use a MSFT product, and intend to upgrade to another one. You do have choices, you know. You could buy a Mac (VBG). And, re. that "very large premium", you've obviously made the same decision the rest of the market for desktop OS has made-you may resent it, but you're going to pay it, because it's worth it to you. BTW, what do you want to do, that you can't do with Win 3.1, or Win 95, but will be able to do with Win 98?
