I agree with you that the 'Hindu' India may not be appropriate way to reference whole India. However, many times western journalists/writers, sometimes due to ignorance, project the Hindu image to serve some other ulterior motives. An average uninformed American reader/TV viewer, wouldn't know the difference anyway and easily buys the idea of 'Hindu India'. You did right in bringing this to the US news media. If not anything it would at least educate the uninformed/biased.
