Tonight I was taking Ammo to his basketball practice. Now you know how cool I think I am in my gold convertible with my Oakleys on. We get in the car and I say, "Let's put the top down!" "NAw....it's too hot" says Ammo.
"Oh, c'mon! It'll feel good . The sun's about down."
I undo the topthingies. "I'll turn the music up loud." (Ammo cringes.) "ALright, I won't play the classical channel."
We put the top down. I fiddle with the radio. Great find---Elton John! THen I put on my red baseball cap with Westbrook College on the front--which is a real college in New Hampshire or someplace. I look at Ammo as we pull out of the drive. "How do I look?" I'm feeling very cool, maybe even sexy.
Ammo looks at me sadly. He's a very sweet, kind child, but very honest. He sighs. "Mom?" I look at him over my Oakleys.
"I think I understand why sometimes teenagers are really embarrassed to be seen with their parents." He looks apologetic.
Well-fine-"Do you want me to put the top back up?" I say nastily.
"No, that's ok."
I turn onto the highway.
"Could you just drive fast until we get out of town?"
Being middle aged is hard enough without teenagers destroying the few self-delusions we have left.
