As for ATM Switching. Yes, ASND has their latest product on the market. These
products will be leap frogged by Cisco....then ASND will come out with a counter. This
is very typical in this industry.

Gary,

I'm not sure you realize how much that Stratacom hiccup at AT&T may have screwed up Cisco's image the FR/ATM market. I've met with about four or five ISP's over the last month, including the very largest ones. They are all either in the process of deploying Ascend ATM now, or looking hard at it. I was quite shocked myself at how unanimous the consensus on Ascend's superiority was. Even GTE who is a loyal Cisco disciple is now deploying buttloads of Ascend GX550's. Only a few months ago that would have been unthinkable, as packet-over-sonet was the only true way to salvation. Cascade for many years has had the very best track record when it comes to testing and debugging their products. The BSTX9000's and CBX500's have years and years of testing and debugging behind them. You might be able to momentarily leapfrog them in capability, but you won't be able to in their track record. The ISP's know this very well, and have AT&T's pain to remind them of this. IMO the ISP's won't go back to Stratacom--they'll wait for the next best product from Ascend.

I think the WAN networking battlefield has finally taken shape. Cisco owns the router market, and Ascend owns the ATM/FR market. Lucent owns nothing.
