The way I understand it the first 5k are a flat fee, then 1 cent a share for all shares above 5k.

These commissions vary widely among brokerage houses. But, some deep discount brokers cater more to the penny arena. Two popular brokers that you may want to check out are National Discount Brokers -- ndb.com, and ETrade -- etrade.com.
