Possible cause for Novell run-up

The appointment of Mike Sheridan as VP of Strategic Business reporting to Schmidt.

Sheridan was the leader of the team that developed JAVA at Sun. More recently he has been working on low cost servers designed to work in homes and control household appliances etc.

Sounds to me like word of his being hired leaked out and the stock ran up. This happened before when Slitz was hired from IBM.

Sheridan coming to Novell is a very important move for Novell. It means they are finally going to look at JAVA and the low end of their product line seriously. Remember in the conference call they stated there were no plans to produce a small business version of Netware 5. So now they will have somebody that thinks small. And its about time.

Only one problem, they still do not appear to have anybody on board that understands the PC industry from the inside. Schmidt has brought in mini-computer people. He had better balance the team by bringing in someone with entrepreneurial experience in Bill Gates domain---the desktop.
