I kind of doubt there are biometrics involved at this point, since the link referred to a "PIN or biometrics." Usually, that means that the card has the potential to incorporate biometrics at some later date. In addition, it would be pretty costly for one practice to incorporate biometric authentication -- just going to smart cards is impressive enough.

It's more another sign that biometric smart cards are how things will ultimately move.
