"Market Forces" have given us an enormous growth in fundamentalists. Market forces will not protect minority rights- especially religious minorities. That was one of the things our founding fathers were most concerned about- but I am not surprised you do not understand this. And it will completely tear our society apart if we cannot give our children some common cultural basis. This was not a big problem in the 1770's as the population was relatively homogenous but it is a huge problem now. One of the few places to homogenize people is in the schools. You, being a rugged Idealistic individualist, will not like it, but to have a society you must have commonalities (no matter how banal that seems) and I want a society. In fact most people want a society. You are in the minority here (and everywhere else) because your views are antithetical to society. I don't know how you think a country like the United States could be peacefully governed using your views. It could not be. You may not mind violence and upheaval but I do.
