I reported that Ciena was losing out to Nortel on most of the big greenfields orders from the likes of Qwest, Level3, Williams Communications, and was losing ILEC orders to Lucent. That observation was true and as the information transpired it was reflected in the market. The company was amazingly evasive in my attempts to reach their key technology people. I assumed they had something to hide. This assumption was premature, but I write a report every month and have to go with the information I have. The fact is they are a great company, but they lack the right product for the immediate deployments by new providers. Their long term future is extremely promising because they are an entrepreneurial supplier of the key communications technology for the millennium and they have correctly focused on multiplying lamdas rather than pumping up SONET bitrates.
