Well, I'm not Mr. Fiondella, but here's an answer: Nothing in the short term. Alan Greenspan remembers raising interest rates while Mexico was spinning into its Peso Crisis, and how that action made the situation there much worse (helping to necessitate the bailout). He looks out and sees Russia, Indonesia and South Korea on the verge of economic meltdown, Japan in a recession, markets all over the place in a nervous tizzy, and knows that a lot of that money is just waiting for an excuse to rush into the safe harbor of US treasury bonds. Which is great for the bonds, but would be Mexico all over again all over Asia and probably Russia, and maybe even Brazil. Ergo, he doesn't pull the trigger and figures Asia's meltdown will slow the US economy anyway.
