I believe that this will give CPQ an opportunity to take the high ground as the '64 bit' leader, since they will have a platform which developers can use today. But I would also expect CPQ to be a strong driver of an integrated strategy which drives to a common API model and code base between Alpha and Merced, certainly for NT and possibly for DEC Unix as well. Time will tell how the product mix plays out, but I am confident that CPQ will try to use this as an opportunity to unite the 64 bit technologies which if done right could help Intel a lot. If CPQ drives 64 bit application development in 99 and Intel can really deliver in summer of '00 then Intel may still be able to pick up the rush of application development which will surely follow the cleanup of Y2K problems. No matter how you cut it this is not bad news for CPQ. Frankly I don't think it is particularly bad news for Intel either, it will give the industry time to come to grips with what is really a pretty radical new technology in Merced.
