About the Long March explosion....

A few days after the accident a short MPEG of the launch and the explosion was made available on the Web -- I think I got it off of CNN's site, but this has been over two years now. It is still probably out there somewhere, if anyone want to try and dig up the address(I'm not volunteering). It was a spectacular failure. As soon as the rocket begins to lift off it starts to pitch over. It barely clears the launch tower, and then drives right into a hillside with a spectacular mushroomed shaped fireball.

I know people who were in Xiaching (sp?) at the time. I also saw video of the aftermath. And I saw pieces of the Intelsat satellite that were recovered and returned to SS/L's Palo Alto campus. The rocket and the satellite were obliterated. As was a significant portion of the town. More than six people died, but I don't want to start up that discussion.

A friend who was there went back to his hotel room only to find the hotel with all the glass blown out, some walls down, and the satellite flight computer in his room. Again, I state that I saw pieces of the satellite back in Palo Alto - there was enough pieces to cover the floor of a huge room the size of a basketball court. There was a concerted effort to recover as much as the satellite as possible, and return it stateside.
