Mohan:

You are extrapolating the current American doctrine of befriending China to the future. I see the future differently because Americans are not stupid. Bush had an approval rating of 90+% after the gulf war, but was ousted due to his bungling of domestic economic policy.

Republicans and and Democratic conservatives are very worried about Clinton's foreign policy. Dick Morris (Ex-Clinton Advisor) is saying that if Clinton permitted China to transfer of missile/nuclear technology for American jobs, he made a mistake; but if he did so for campaign contributions, he committed a crime. The ballooning American current account deficit is a time-bomb ticking to explode. Americans are enjoying an explosion of wealth on paper (IRA, 401(k), 403(k) accounts) and so are spending heavily, increasing corporate profits and US tax revenue. A minor implosion in the stock market will be a trigger. There are too many triggers. Let's see.
