Top Cat,

Stock prices are the result of investors perceptions. If those perceptions are at variance with reality the price of the stock moves substantially. Obviously, some investors had unreasonable expectations about Dell's earnings, and when earnings were reported they were disappointed, and sold.

Agree. The investors' perceptions of the fundamentals was at variance with reality. IMO some investors did expect more stellar earnings, and probably some expected a stock split announcement at this time. I have no way of judging how much this or similar threads may have contributed to a split expectation or to heightened earnings expectations, but I think it safe to say 'somewhat'. Additionally, momentum investors may well have decided to sell, take the run-up profits, and move their money to a different arena temporarily. The momentum players will probably be back in August.
