Dell was not really well positioned to take advantage of merced in its early phase, so this will probably be neutral to positive for them as well. Why? Because Dell has a great relationship with Intel on advanced 32 bit technologies, and an engineering and marketing model which positions them well to drive high end 32 bit during the interim before merced. They also can use the time to develop their marketing strategy and product lines to better sell 64 bit products.
However, after the merced launch I think that CPQ will have a big edge over Dell in the 64 bit space, especially if they use the next 18 months, and their alpha position, to strengthen their position with MS and Intel as a key driver of 64 bit technology. Likewise this gives CPQ a nice position versus HP, which will not be able to develop their 64 bit presence in the same way.
