Hi Beachbumm - This author agrees too that a Merced delay could be bullish for Sunw.. (https://www.siliconinvestor.com/readmsg.aspx?msgid=4653557)
From the article:
"...But the delay provides an opportunity for Unix vendor Sun Microsystems, processor maker International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) and Digital Equipment Corp.(DEC), which sells the speedy Alpha chip..."
"...A late Merced, however, is a blow for vendors planning on its timely arrival, including Hewlett-Packard, Silicon Graphics Inc. (SGI), Sequent Computer Systems Inc. (SQNT) and even Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), which is relying on powerful hardware to run its Windows NT 5.0 operating system..."

IMO the biggest impact will be to HWP. Let's hope SUNW can gain more market share from HWP as new customers look to SUNW for their solutions. Sunw has an upgrade path that will utilize BOTH the Sparc processor and "when available" the Merced chip. HWP bet the ranch on the Merced upgrade and will be hurt by any delay accordingly.

It is extremely fast, highly reliable, scalable, secure, very easy to install and use, optimized for Java and supports more than 12,000 applications..."
Now let's hope IBM adopts SOLARIS as their standard Unix based OS.... |
