U.S Foreign Policy- Advantage China.
Republicans and and Democratic conservatives are very worried about Clinton's foreign policy. Dick Morris (Ex-Clinton Advisor) is saying that if Clinton permitted China to transfer of missile/nuclear technology for American jobs, he made a mistake;..
Sankar:
In all fairness to the President the U.S China policy is not initiated by Clinton, as you very well know, it started with Nixon. So Clinton's policy is a mere continuation of the same U.S policies since that time,he might have taken it a step further but still I am not willing to put the entire blame on Clinton, well that will be unfair.
I don't know how the Republicans all of a sudden do a vote-face and take a 'holier than thou' attitude, where the hell have they been for the past quarter of a century??? Besides they started the whole process. If anything they are more to blame than Clinton. Don't think for a minute if the Republicans were in power now it would have been any different either. The chest beating of late by the Republicans is all a show for political gain and nothing more.
U.S foreign policy-China vs India
Why the U.S foreign policy will continue to tilt towards China. Tallying the score.
China
Advantage.
1.Military. Nuclear power/Formidabble military strength.
2.Economic. Huge market, receptive to foreign direct investments, larger economy,Market reform started in the 70s. 166 billion dollars in foreign direct investments up until 1996 of which 10% U.S investments approx.15 billion.Added asset Hong Kong, new additon Macau, possible addition Taiwan. 3.Possible candidate for democracy. 4.Strategic location. 5.Comparatively friendly relations for the last 2 decades 6.Permanent member of the U.N security council
Disadvantage 1.Communist 2.Possible adversary 3.Possible aggressor in the region 4.Corrupt and inefficient bureaucracy 5.More 'power' to destabilize the region and the world.
India
Advantage. Military 1.Self declared Nuclear state 2.Strong military in the region.
Political/Economic 1.Demoracy 2.Potential to become huge market. 3.Non aggressive 4.No potential threat
Disadvantage. 1.Not as strong as China [military and economy] 2.Late comer to market reform, economy not completely open 3.U.S investments less than 5 billion, total FDI only 10 billion. 4.corrupt & inefficient bureaucracy 5.Lukewarm relationship 6.Less power to destabilize but still cause to worry.
So you see it is costlier for the U.S [and the world] to damage relations with China which took them over 2 decades to build than India. So until and unless India becomes an equal or better economic and military power than China it will be a difficult situation for the U.S. I hope I am wrong but that is the way I see it.
Here is a thought and novel idea: May be the U.S,India & China can all have friendlier relations,oh hell what the heck throw in Pakistan in there as well, one never knows it could happen!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ [Foreign Direct Investments [FDI] in China.] <Sourece: U.S embassy, Beijing,China.>
3. Despite policies that restrict or prohibit foreign investment in many sectors of its economy, China has achieved remarkable success in attracting foreign investment in the sectors and areas in which it allows foreign investment, especially in the coastal regions and Special Economic Zones (SEZs). With tremendous inflows of foreign investment, particularly over the past 45 years, China has become the second largest recipient of foreign direct investment in the world, after the U.S. According to Chinese statistics, actual foreign direct investment in China since 1979 reached an accumulated total of just under $177 billion by the end of 1996, with almost $42 billion invested in 1996 alone....
