Sorry, don't buy this notion for a minute. If it were true then DELL, GATE, and MUEI (Micron) would not be the three biggest direct vendors. There are dozens of other lesser known direct vendors such as Comtrade, EPS, Midwest Micro, etc. All of them are cheaper than GATE, DELL and MUEI. In fact, these are the three most expensive of the direct players and the most successful.

Intel did up the ante with Pentium, but the fact is that they competed before Pentium and after Pentium for the 486 business. Intel's 486's were priced higher than the competitions but they still dominated that market.

I hear people ask for Intel and Pentium by name all the time.

As for facts being mixed up, I think you have your opinions mixed up.
