<..I don't know what Nacchio's talking about, if he said that. ..>

In a packed room of probably 60-80 fund managers during QWST's breakout session at H&Q's Tech conference, I assure you he said it and was not at all unclear in it's meaning.

According to Nacchio, QWST is not currently, nor does it have any future plans to buy or deploy WDM technology for it's fiber network. And fwiw, he was flanked by his top people in finance and engineering.

<..is the enabling characteristics xWDM brings out in bandwidth administration, flow grooming and media "hand-off" schemes, with or without the need for more capacity...>

I agree that there are network management advantages offered by wavelength-routed WDM networks, but for whatever reason, Nacchio was very clear on the point. If you search, I think you will deduce that QWST does NOT use WDM nor have any QWST-network specific WDM relationships.

In fact, what I DID miss from George's post, was this very point of his: QWST is NOT using WDM (CIEN or otherwise). They are testing Nortel's Terabit switch router for the building of an IP network (which will be backward compatible with future NT WDM, when the time DOES come that it is needed)

I also found these interesting WDM articles (that you've likely already seen. And as always Frank, thanks for your consistently studied and thought-provoking contributions - *throughout* SI):

"MCI Says New WDM Is All Sweetness And Light"

"As cost drops and capacity rises, researchers up the ante in data links -- Optical interconnects getting supercharged"
techweb.com

"Complexity rises with member roll -- Internet2 faces engineering hurdles"
techweb.com

"Chip makers taking aim at SONET/SDH"

"Optical group could recast Net backbone"

Have a great weekend! Are you going to Supercom?
