IPSCO , the Regina-based steel manufacturer, has become the darling of the Canadian steel industry -- in a year that the WHOLE industry was forecast to do well.

What's driven the latest activity is the announcement Wednesday that the company is building a new $450 million steel mill in the southern States. This reflects the fact that the company is gaining a bigger and bigger chunk of US market share.

When the analysts predicted earlier this year that the Cdn steel industry was going to have a banner year, I put my money on Algoma Steel. It's looking like I should have chosen IPSCO.

(I'm not writing off ALG, of course, just wishing it had moved UP by now instead of the other direction.)

GLTUA,
Marcman
