Backup Solutions..... links to Drive Image evaluations

Dave, I am now an owner of Partion Magic and Drive Image, thanks. I made my first full backup:) I could not backup directly to my external drive as it is not configured to run in DOS. To get around that I used Partion Magic to make a 2 GB partition on my C drive ( 4.5 GB C drive + new 2GB partition D Drive). I then backed up the C drive to the D drive and then copied the backup file to my external drive after I booted back to Win95. I found it a painless process and worth the effort. ( assuming restoration process is as painless)

A few comments, I do not recall if you mentioned these yet.

The reason Drive Image is a DOS application is that Win95 and NT always have some files open ( this is from the Power Quest documentation). By running in DOS the entire harddrive is idle so it can be duplicated without running into open files.

Drive Image has an option to copy one drive to another without compression. Spots, my impression is that an NT drive would copy to another drive and then boot although it was not specifically stated as such.

The new version of Drive Image (2.x) has the capability of retrieving individual files but I can not comment on it as I have not found it yet.

I paid $55.xx at Comp USA. In addition there is a $15 rebate. Fry's had the older version (1.x) for $29 with two newer versions (2.x) hiding behind the old boxes. They wanted $68 for the software.

A combination of harddrive backups Drive Image style and a working harddrive ready to boot by changing the boot sequence in the BIOS is appealing to me. One could have many alternate backups on CDR as the media cost is low.

The second, third, forth..... hardrives present interesting alternatives. One could have Win95, NT, Win98 as well as alternate configurations of each residing on separate harddrives. One would simply alter the sequence in the BIOS and you would have a significantly different machine.
