Jack:

Unfortunately, each time there is a cyclic downturn the government uses it as leverage to further its powerbase. The most blatant example being the years following the 1929 stock market crash.

As Noble Prize winning economist Milton Friedman has pointed out, it was U.S. government policy which led up to the crash and Roosevelt's New deal policy which turned the aftermath from a severe recession into a Great Depression that lasted many more years (and may have gone on into the 1950s had it not been for WWII).

If this country saw another Depression, the U.S. would probably become a fascist state.
