I agree with almost everything in your post - except for the conclusion.

The mistake most people who evaluate Dell make, is to assume that they are in the computer business and that their expertise is in computers. That is a description of where their center of gravity happens to be at the moment, not where their core expertise lies. Look at what has really driven Dell's success and you see business and market analysis as the key differentiators. CPQ spent more on R&D last year than Intel did, more than $1.8 billion, and I would contend that they have the best and most in-depth technology base in the PC business. That has not helped them at all in their attempt to take 6% cost out of their delivery chain, or improve manufacturing cash flow. It just takes a different set of skills to do what Dell does.

If Dell rides the box curve down, I will be very surprised.
