So Alpha has been around since 91-92 and neither MSFT nor ISVs broke down Dec's doors but now they will because Merced is delayed by 6 months? I don't think I get it yet.

Merced was directed to enterprise/mission critical systems. Dec has been in those shops for decades. It certainly doesn't need Compaq to open doors. Their failure has been to lay out a strategy/road map that would make CIOs comfortable with an Alpha direction instead of falling victim to a Wintel promise. As for HP, I agree with what you say, but at least they have the high end products to sell. Dell & CPQ are trying to enter the high end and therefore will be hurt more IMO. HP, Sun & IBM (and yes Dec) already play there and therefore the 6 months wouldn't mean as much to them. I also don't think CPQ has their act together enough to turn this into a victory. If they did, they wouldn't have let Dell sneak up their behind :)

p.s. I know the press/spin doctors agree with your version of HP suffering the most.
