1. Intel did NOT buy DEC's CPU business. Intel bought the fab and agreed to manufacture the Alpha chip for DEC. DEC retained the Alpha design team and continues to manufacture and market high-end servers and workstations based on the Alpha.

2. Regarding inventory, are you suggesting that they simply junk it? That would just trash a lot of assets that could be turned into cash. Better to sell at a loss than to throw it away!
