TOWER TESTS DVD RENTAL IN 14 STORES
(by Wendy Wilson)

Tower Records/Video, one of the leading sellers of DVD software, last week began testing rental of the new format in four markets. The DVD rental test, VP of video John Thrasher told VB, is expected to run all summer in 14 Tower stores that have VHS rental departments: nine stores in the San Francisco Bay area; two in Portland, Ore.; one in Philadelphia; and two in Virginia, one each in Richmond and Vienna.

Each store offers 300 to 400 DVD titles for rental. The stores do not rent players.

Sacramento, Calif.-based Tower selected the test cities, Thrasher said, because they are among the markets where Warner Home Video began testing a DVD rental program late last month. Warner has said it will back the test with an aggressive consumer marketing campaign.

Warner's test is in the four Tower test markets, plus Dallas (VB, 4/13). The supplier is believed to have chosen San Francisco and Richmond because they are the test markets for Divx, the limited-play DVD variation.....
