Dave, all. The on=going 'knock' on TLAB is that sales/profits are too dependent on the amazing success of their digital cross-connect product lines. That TLAB is a one trick pony, and what if they don't pull another rabbit out of the hat. One also hears echoes of TLAB being outflanked by a 'paradigm' shift, primarily by the emergence of George Gilder's 'dumb and dark' networks which dramatically lessen (or even eliminate) the need for intelligent switches in voice/data networks. Finally, one sees companies like Lucent buying various companies to move into Cisco's turf and I keep wondering at what point Lucent is moving into TLAB's turf?
In other words, my response to Dave's call to action on this thread is to get some focused concentration on the issues outlined above. I am confident that given the maturity and intelligence of the posters here we can tolerate and welcome some discourse even if it is probing the alleged weaknesses on TLAB's flanks. Just in case, let me hasten to add that I think there are very likely good answers to the "negatives" being thrown their way and I am certainly a bull. But I am not technically qualified to comment on the whole convergence issue. My take is that Lucent is the 12 billion pound gorilla and I would be not happy to find TLAB in their cross-hairs. As to the dark and dumb network, Michael Birck made it quite clear that he feels AONs are years down the road and that TLAB will be ready. And there are others of you who could advance the discussion much further. Any takers? Regards, Mike Doyle
