Few thoughts,

1) In light of the money the Arab brethren are willing to dole out to get their hands on the nuclear technology from Pakistan, does US sanctions mean much? US/Israel dominance in Mid East is in under more threat now than ever before. Do you know what will happen if these Mid Eastern countries get the N-weapons?

2) US could have supported dictatorial regimes because they are excellent way of creating imbalance or offered scope to contain Russia's expansion. US interests were in the early 1940-70's to create an imbalance in a peaceful region by supporting dictatorial regimes which were enemies to countries supported by Russia. If a war precipitated out it gave US a chance to make money by trading weapons and establish even a stronger presence (its bases) for a closer monitoring of Russia's military activities. This was necessary for US because Russia had a method of occupying countries by initially trading, then spreading communist propaganda, and taking over either politically or by force. Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan are just examples.

Gunther.
