NASDAQ Composite.
As promised, here is historical data for the NASDAQ Composite.
IQ Suite has data going back 20 years on the NASADAQ and that makes
this data even more statistically relevant than the SOX which only
goes back to 1994. The conclusion is similar to the SOX. The NASDAQ
Composite went UP an average of 5.2% from April to August in the
twenty years since 1978. So far this year the NASDAQ Composite is up
13.3% and is down 4.8% since April. Over the last four years (same
time period as the SOX data), the NASDAQ Composite went up an average
of 8.4% over the summer months vs. 16.9% for the SOX. Even if one
looks at it strictly as up or down instead of average gain, the
NASDAQ Composite was up 11 times and down 8 times in the summer
months since 1978. This should dispel claims about technology stocks
being weaker during the summer months. I'm not sure who came up with
that conclusion, but the data does not support that position either
over the past four or past twenty years.
An interesting point is that the average volatility in the NASDAQ
over the past twenty years is only 6.8% compared to the SOX which
had an average volatility of 17.0% since 1994. To make the
comparison more valid, one should look at the NASDAQ over the same
time period as the SOX. The average volatility in the NASDAQ since
May 1994 (same period as the SOX) was only 8.0% vs. 17.0% for the
SOX. One would expect this to be the case since the NASDAQ is more
diversified than the SOX; however, the data suggests that the
additional risk in the SOX (as measured by volatility) does not
warrant the additional profit potential. The volatility in the SOX
was 2.1 times greater than the NASDAQ and the average monthly gain
was only 1.2 times greater for the SOX. Hmm, maybe I should just buy
the NASDAQ and forget about trading gg.
The average draw down in the NASDAQ is also lower than the SOX (-5.4%
for the NASDAQ vs. -13.3% for the SOX). When compared over the same
period, the numbers are -5.8% for the NASDAQ vs. -13.3% for the SOX.
Again, one would expect the draw down to be smaller in the more
diversified NASDAQ. The draw down in the SOX was 2.3 times greater
than that of the NASDAQ since 1994 and again, this is not a good risk
to reward when compared to the average monthly gain in the SOX. It
would be better to analyze data going back 20 years on the SOX before
coming to this conclusion, however.
I found some errors in the notes of my post last night and they are
corrected here. In addition, the SOX went up an average of 16.9%
from April to August 1994 - 1997, not 25.8% as I posted last night.

1. Volatility (Vol) was calculated by subtracting the monthly low
from the monthly high and dividing the result by the previous month's
close. It measures the percentage that the NASDAQ Composite moved
from its lowest to its highest point around the previous month's
close during the current month.
2. Draw down (D-dwn) was calculated by subtracting the previous
month's high from the current month's low and dividing the result by
the previous month's high It measures the percentage that one would
be down at the lowest point of the current month if they had bought
the index at highest point in the prior month.
3. The column labeled Sum is the percentage change for the NASDAQ
Composite from its close in April to its close in August of that year.
