Virtually everything Microsoft has done on the internet since December 7, from giving away the browser and IIS, to Active-X, to all their pretty little proprietary html extensions and Cascading Style Sheets has been defensive. Even their deal with the Wall Street Journal is defensive. The whole purpose has been to protect Windows by doing everything possible to keep people from using Navigator and keep Netscape software off the PC desk top.

Somewhere I read a quote by Bill Gates or somebody at Microsoft who said that if someone could come up with a way to expand onto the internet while hanging onto the Windows franchise, they'd have a job at Microsoft in an internet second.
