Is AltaVista comparable to Yahoo or Excite? Not a chance. Altavista is far behind even LCOS and SEEK.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I remember that Yahoo runs on AltaVista.

Basically, AltaVista is a really good relational database written by DEC engineers and tuned to the needs of web searches.

The AltaVista crew could do a great job of becoming a competitor to Yahoo and the others if allowed to do so independently.

Consider the fact that making the beautiful consumer screens is not nearly as difficult as writing the database code. Also, AltaVista may decide to increase the amount they charge Yahoo, not give them the latest developments in the product, etc.

AltaVista has also been marketing their product to businesses as a in-house search engine because intranets have become more popular.

I guess, the ideal thing would be for CPQ to IPO AltaVista and try to buy back the brains that left.
