Bill, there are several factions within Israel, as I understand it. Netanyahu is conservative, and to maintain his coalition he needs to play to the more nationalistic, religiously conservative, Zionists among the population. I don't know if you say 60 Minutes last Sunday, the segment about the Jews who were building in the middle of a Palestinian neighborhood, but to me it was really discouraging. They believe that God has given them the land. They are so fanatical that it really seems impossible to imagine a peace settlement which is fair to both sides, unless there is a lot of international pressure to be reasonable. With the U.S. Congress backing the Zionists, nothing the Clinton administration does will be very forceful. I have lots of problems with Clinton, but that does not mean that everything he does is wrong, and the Jews reaching some decent settlement with the Palestinians is really necessary for peace in that region. It seems unfair to me for Gingrich to act that way on foreign soil.
