Mike, my view is that the Merced chip is vital to
the future of INTC and the PC industry in general.
I agree with previous comments that there are no
compelling reasons to upgrade from a Pentium to a
Pentium II and this is hurting the industry big
time. Particularly, when Joe Average found out a
sub 1K box does pretty much anything.

The next wave or silver bullet has to be a 64bit
chip. This will spawn the next wave of software
and hardware configurations that the buyer
"must" have. Big companies with ever growing
databases are now demanding to scale upward using
products that are best handled with 64 bit technology.

The reasons for the delay of Merced has got to be
engineering related. I would guess the INTC
marketing guys are pleading with engineering
to get it done.

Until then, HWP looks a little foolish with a
shortcoming in their ability to scale and there
bets on INTC. SGI looks pretty good if they can
capitalize with their already well established
64 bit line. Things are getting interesting.

Two cents from the lurker gallery. DS
