That's why I said: "etc." :-)

They did exactly what BG does now. First, they contracted to use the patented technology in their vehicles, then they had their engineers redesign it so they could get their own patent on it, then the severed the relationship with the outside vendor (took about 2 - 5 years depending on the technology), and incorporated their "new" patented version into their line of automobiles.

Sometimes they just took a technology and never paid for it. (Such as the variable windshield wipers. The inventor of those had to fight GM. Ford and Toyota for 17 years before finally winning in court. I think he got somewhere around $87 million in damages.)

But when they did it the other way -- had their people reverse-engineer it and rebuild it slightly differently, enough to get a patent on it -- it was accepted as legal. The DOJ never went after them for the same methods that BG is using now!
