Christine, Jack, Jerry Brown is complicated, and enigmatic. As usual, your thoughtful comments provide me with some additional stimulation. I did read some of the position papers of Jerry Brown. I think he is dead wrong on capital punishment, but one must respect his views. I agree with you that his radicalism is appealing in this me-too environment of the Republicrats who now run our nation. You are also correct in saying that we should not always hold someone responsible for his views or statements of twenty years ago (unless one has restated them.) Certainly I would not want to be held to that standard and would feel foolish if some of my college essays were read to me. Whatever Jerry Brown's virtues or shortcomings, we should all admire him for his forthrightness and for saying what he (apparently) believes. We could say the same for a strikingly different and equally controversial political figure -- Pat Buchanan. Barry Goldwater shared that virtue. Like them and their viewpoints or not, what they say is what they believe. I like that and can deal with such a person. On the other hand Holly's list of offenses Message 4649466 is pretty devastating. I wonder how Brown would reply to those facts now? Jack
