Art INTC's Merced WAS to be a "server" 64-bit multi-processor

Cyrix and AMD are focused on the Pentium II 32-bit desktop market .

However IBM's Micro Electronics Division has , through its AIM (Apple-Motorola-IBM) partnership , developed a G 4 RISC PowerPC .

Running faster and cooler , it uses the new copper technology developed by IBM and Motorola , and is to be in IBM's RS/6000 servers by 1998 year end .

Apple is rumored to be moving up its scheduled use of a 600MZ G 4 :

" ... the "new" news is that IBM may be working with Apple to provide a better price/performance ratio in the motherboard chipset, and that with IBM's help, Apple may be able to release a G4-based machine with reasonably good OS-level support around the time of Macworld San Francisco in January 1999. INTC is behind IBM , with INTC's Merced now scheduled for mid-year 2000 .
