Mike, that observer is absolutely correct. I think that one of Greenspan motivations is a fear of a meltdown. He wants to have the ability to lower rates drastically to counter a precipitous collapse or accident in the market. If he were to lower interest rates to their "normal" premium above inflation (2.5 to 3%), he'd have to lower them to less than 5%. He then may find himself in a box (just as BOJ is finding now), where lowering interest rates no longer have the desired stimulative effect. As long as our high rates do not choke the economy, he does not mind keeping them high. Rubin, on the other hand view any decrease of 100 basis point as saving the treasury $60 Billion bucks a year. I figure that is one good reason to keep the feds and treasury apart.

By the way, YAHOO is not reporting Asian market tonight. I would have guessed that a continuation of the decline should be in progress with the Nikkei once more approaching the 15,300 or so. Anyone knows what is happening in Asia tonight?
