Singapore Telecom Unveils ATM Services, At Least 10% Cheaper
SINGAPORE (Dow Jones)--National telephone company Singapore Telecommunications Ltd. (P.SGT) Monday implemented a new technology which will enable faster transmission and at rates which will be at least 10% cheaper from its current offerings.
The company said it has launched its Asynchronous Transfer Mode, or ATM, technology, which is faster than the existing lease-based services. The service is now available internally in Singapore and to Japan and the U.S.
ATM technology enables transmission of voice, data, image and video signals at speeds of up to 15 megabits per second.
The company, which is expected to loose all its monopoly completely by 2000, said it has also signed a bilateral deal with AT&T Corp. (T) to run a second link between the U.S. and Singapore. The second link, which will be operational from Sept. 1, will transmit data at 45 megabits per second.
Singapore Telecom said it has also launched a new fax service which cuts rates by up to 46%. The new service, called FaxPlus012, will cover fax transmissions to Australia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Switzerland, the U.S. and the U.K.
To use this service, customers need to simply prefix "012" to the called number. |
