Caxton, what fun! "Some people argue that L.M. Ericsson and others may hold licenses that would preclude Qualcomm's intellectual property rights." They would wouldn't they. I say call their bluff.

"Ericsson is the only major vendor that has not licensed IS-95 technology from Qualcomm, and
Qualcomm has indicated that all its current IS-95 CDMA licensees would be granted access to its
intellectual property used in the third-generation standard without being charged any additional
upfront fees. This could give IS-95 licensees that are ETSI members incentive to get the issue
resolved."

Oops-a-daisy for Ericsson. Talk about out on a limb. No wonder Bill Frezza hasn't been saying much for over a year. Ericsson getting him to shoot at cdmaOne might turn out to have been one of the more counterproductive efforts in modern corporate history.

It seems Qualcomm and the cdmaOne crew should continue full steam ahead with W-cdmaOne, forget about YETSI or whatever it is and just make the best multimedia wireless system. Overlay GSM in Europe with a Newbury style cdmaOne air interface and leave YETI in the dustbin of history. There would be a slight delay without the bludging European central planners, but that would be made up in margins, product volumes etc.

Ericsson has now advertized that GSM is a defunct technology, with cdma the new wave! So GSM will die on the vine, even though Ericsson will be stuck with it. Selling GSM will become untenable.

By the way, I heard a rumor that Iridium voice is tinny and delayed! But maybe software will fix it. I also heard that Globalstar is great for voice quality, as you'd expect with cdmaOne, with NO voice delay perceptible.

PS: A little politics - now Pakistan has called for an international review of the whole nuclear issue. Ooops a daisy! Now Bill Clinton is going to have to try to sidestep that one...I bet he'd rather be facing a few Pakistani nukes - much easier to deal with and with a more predictable outcome. Come on Bill! You want to cut nukes and international threats? Let's call YOUR bluff.

Gorby started a unilateral nuclear testing halt and poor old Raygun couldn't bring himself to match it. All he could do was blow hot air. Yayy for Pakistan and India having nukes! Now they just need a few rockets. Kazakhstan is just over the border and I hear they have some good MIRV technology compliments of Loral no doubt. In fact, now that the USA is having a dig at NZ over our deregulating imports in a free trade effort, much to the dismay of those high in the USA administration who don't REALLY like free trade, having a few other nuke power around is decidedly desirable. It'll keep Clinton's beady little eyes off our freedom loving country for a while. Freedom loving being somewhat an exaggeration of course! Plenty is prohibited. But it's not as bad as it was.

Maybe it's time for a United Nations reconstitution into something more than a talk shop.
