How the heck did you come up with such an ignorant conclusion?

Given a simplest possible gate, the maximum frequency is about 600MHz. As Time Traveler remembers, Alpha was built on 3 layers of metal. Alpha engineers traded better power management for silicon real estate. Even with less dense FETs, Alpha's die size is still very impressive, and that appeared to be a good trade-off. With 400MHz of operation, it is getting very close to the 600MHz limit (on the log scale).

DEC has done an excellent job in the silicon arena but has been a cry-baby on the legal front.

So, Kenny boy, you do not get a speed increase by adding more layers of metal!
