M'bishi, SK Telecom jointly develop phone chip

TOKYO, June 1 (Reuters) - Mitsubishi Electric Corp
said on Monday that it and SK Telecom Co Ltd of South Korea had
jointly developed an integrated circuit for next-generation
W-CDMA cellular telephones.
W-CDMA (Wideband code division multiple access) is expected
to become the world standard for next-generation cellular
phones, as Japan, South Korea and Europe are all likely to adopt
the system.
Mitsubishi said the chip would supplied to users in South
Korea, Japan, Europe and the rest of Asia.
SK Telecom would field test a new handset using the new chip
in 1999, it said.
