(CNN) -- Storms and tornadoes in the northern Plains, upper Midwest and the Northeast have killed at least 15 people, destroyed homes and businesses and shut down power for nearly 1 million people.
Sunday night's storms tore from Pennsylvania through New England. It was a deadly repeat of storms Saturday night and Sunday morning in South Dakota, Michigan and Wisconsin.
The storms were triggered when a cool, dry air mass from Canada collided with hot, moist air over the northern Plains, Midwest, and the Great Lakes.
Winds gusted to 107 mph in central Wisconsin, to 92 mph near Grand Rapids, Michigan, and to 70 to 80 mph around Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota.
Pennsylvania
In Salisbury, near the West Virginia border, a tornado was blamed for one death. The storm also injured 30 people, including four who were struck by lightning and survived.
In the southeastern part of the state, a tornado was reported in northern Berks County and wind damage was heavy in Philadelphia and the surrounding counties. |
