A 12 Coins

Step 1: break the coins in 3 groups of 4 (A B and C)
- Weigh A against B, if they balance the fake coin is in C and
we know that A and B contain good coins
- Weigh A against C, if the C goes up the fake is lighter,
If C goes down, fake is heavier
- if A and B do not balance, we know that C contains good coins
- Weigh the lighter of A or B agains C. If they balance,
then the fake coin is in the heavier of A or B and we know
the fake is heavier.
If the lighter of A or B is also ligher than C then we know that
C contains the Fake and it is lighter

At this point we know which group of 4 contains the fake and if it is
heavier or lighter

Step 2: split your group of four in half and weigh 2 coins against 2 coins.
You know if the fake is heavier, that the fake will be in the heavier 2
coins. Weigh each of the heavier 2 coins against each other and then
pick up the heaviest coin as the fake.

You know if the fake is lighter, that the fake will be in the lighter 2
coins. Weigh each of the lighter 2 coins against each other and then
pick up the lighter coin as the fake.
