Peter:

Pakistan joining India is a great idea, but it will not happen as long as the Muslim elite/generals rule Pakistan. The elite/generals are misleading the common Pakistanis by telling them lies that India had invaded them 3 times and that India had just been planning for a nuclear attack.

Sarif was not inclined to conduct the nuclear tests; but Benazir Bhutto threatened street demonstrations if Sarif did not test (to win the support of generals) and all the generals forced Sarif to go with the tests. I read an article in which Sarif had asked his constituents if they wanted "motorway" or "nuclear tests." The preference was for building motorways.

Pakistani rulers had to build of the tempo of imminent Indian attacks to unnerve the people. In 1990s, Pakistani generals consulted with the USA to invade Kashmir and threatened to use their nuclear arms then. The deputy director of the CIA made mid-night flights to Pakistan to convince the Pak generals then that they would receive mega-tons in response to kilo-tons of Pak bombs and that it was not in their interest to pursue a war. Pak generals insisted that India was ready to attack and so they had to preempt. It was Bill Gates (who later became CIA director) who had to borrow Indian troop deployment areal pictures to show to Pakistani generals that they were lying. The war then could be averted.

The American media is reporting American intelligence failure, whereas CIA knew of the weapons as of 1990. Left it to themselves, most Pakistanis would not have wanted partition. India has 120 mil Muslims as compared to Pakistan's 140 mil. But, the British calculation in 1947 motivated Jinnah enough to call for a Muslim nation. One was created. But, that was not worth.

I hope Safif gains real power of Pakistanis to move towards a federation of India and Pakistan (union is impossible) in which both countries have their autonomy but collaborate on economic development.
