They still lose money in the PC division, it's big iron that still makes them money. All of the sudden they realized what a great web server a mainframe can be. They probably lose more money on the OS/2 division than they make from the current pc division i.e Aptiva.

Compaq did a great job of reverse engineering, I still remember some assembler I wrote that ran correctly on a Compaq, but not the IBM PC. Seems they forgot to pop the stack on and certain INT call to the BIOS. I had to work around their bugs since most people had "real" IBM PC's.
