China launches U.S.-made communications satellite

BEIJING (AP) - China successfully launched a U.S.-made telecommunications satellite aboard a Chinese rocket Saturday, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.

The satellite, made by Lockeed Martin for the China Orient
Telecom Satellite Co., entered orbit as planned after the 6
p.m. Beijing time launch (6 a.m. EDT; 1000 GMT) of the
Long-March 3B rocket from the Xichang launching center in
southwestern Sichuan province, the report said.

Chinastar-1 will be operated at 87.5 degrees East longitude to
provide telecommunications services. The spacecraft is
designed with at least a 10-year lifetime.

It was the 10th successful launch of a Long-March series
rocket, China's most advanced domestically produced rocket,
the report said. The maiden launch of the Long-March 3B in Feb. 1996 failed because of an error in the control system. The second launch,
on Aug. 20, 1997, was a success.
